Royal Coach & Motor Works has been serving Brunswick County for 20 years. We built our customer base through referrals, and still do today! Our dedicated technicians and staff will go out of their way to explain any repair to you, and will even take the time to show you the problem with your vehicle. More than once, we have been able to troubleshoot and repair vehicles that dealerships could not fix!
Jay opened Royal Coach & Motor Works in February of 1995. During the first year, he answered phones and scheduled appointments throughout the day, closed the shop at 5:00 pm, and then worked in the garage through the night. Now he has technicians and staff whom he loves to brag about. (He would put them up against any other shop!)
As a real people person, Jay loves one-on-one with customers, and taking an active role in the community. He’s been known to grab his techs and drive around to older customers’ homes to help prepare for bad weather. On Christmas mornings, you will find the Royals at the shop along with members of God’s Garage, cooking and delivering breakfast to homeless camps, shut-ins, hospice workers, service workers, Fort Fisher ferry workers, and anyone who may be down on their luck. In 2014, Royal Coach served 205 plates!
From Jay – “It’s hard to believe I started Royal Coach & Motor Works more than 20 years ago! In that time, I’ve made many new customers, and also friends. I have gained a great deal of mechanical knowledge, and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to handpick my technicians. It’s a great feeling to be able to leave my shop and take a customer to lunch, knowing that my techs and service writer have everything under control.
“If I’m not with a customer when I’m out of the shop, I may be racing! My father was a street racer back in the 1960s. He would buy ’55, ’56, and ’57 wrecked Chevrolets, and have me strip them and categorize the parts. Not only was this good side money, it started me on the journey to who I am today! In the early ‘70s, I street raced, and then got into asphalt modifieds. By the early ‘80s, I realized I was not going to get ahead or have the life I wanted working for someone else. I remarried in 1992 to my beautiful wife, Kelly (who basically runs my shop!), and I’m racing again—about 20 races a year!”
Kelly is the backbone of Royal Coach & Motor Works. She oversees the office, as well as the entire operation! She is especially knowledgeable about tires, and is constantly complimented on her expertise by tire distributors and customers alike. Our customers also appreciate her ability to explain mechanical issues in logical, understandable layman’s terms.
Dan has been with us for a little over two years. He came to Royal Coach with a very strong background in German and European vehicles, and a gift for wiring. No matter how challenging, Dan will not let a problem get the best of him. He is a very good troubleshooter who never throws in the towel!
